Who sells the largest number of cameras in India?

I know we all are very much bombarded by news and articles from all around but believe me very few of them make it into this blog page.

Have a look at this one, I found it amazing, and thought about sharing it with you all…

Who sells the largest number of cameras in India?

Your guess is likely to be Sony, Canon or Nikon. Answer is none of the above. The winner is Nokia whose main line of business in India is not cameras but cell phones.

Reason being cameras bundled with cellphones are outselling stand alone cameras. Now, what prevents the cellphone from replacing the camera outright? Nothing at all. One can only hope the Sonys and Canons are taking note.

Try this. Who is the biggest in music business in India? You think it is HMV Sa-Re-Ga-Ma? Sorry. The answer is Airtel. By selling caller tunes (that play for 30 seconds) Airtel makes more than what music companies make by selling music albums (that run for hours).

Incidentally Airtel is not in music business. It is the mobile service provider with the largest subscriber base in India. That sort of competitor is difficult to detect, even more difficult to beat (by the time you have identified him he has already gone past you). But if you imagine that Nokia and Bharti (Airtel's parent) are breathing easy you can't be farther from truth.

Nokia confessed that they all but missed the smartphone bus. They admit that Apple's Iphone and Google's Android can make life difficult in future. But you never thought Google was a mobile company, did you? If these illustrations mean anything, there is a bigger game unfolding. It is not so much about mobile or music or camera or emails?

The "Mahabharat" (the great Indian epic battle) is about "what is tomorrow's personal digital device"? Will it be a souped up mobile or a palmtop with a telephone? All these are little wars that add up to that big battle. Hiding behind all these wars is a gem of a question - "who is my competitor?"

Once in a while, to intrigue my students I toss a question at them. It says "What Apple did to Sony, Sony did to Kodak, explain?" The smart ones get the answer almost immediately. Sony defined its market as audio (music from the walkman). They never expected an IT company like Apple to encroach into their audio domain. Come to think of it, is it really surprising? Apple as a computer maker has both audio and video capabilities. So what made Sony think he won't compete on pure audio? "Elementary Watson". So also Kodak defined its business as film cameras, Sony defines its businesses as "digital."

In digital camera the two markets perfectly meshed. Kodak was torn between going digital and sacrificing money on camera film or staying with films and getting left behind in digital technology. Left undecided it lost in both. It had to. It did not ask the question "who is my competitor for tomorrow?" The same was true for IBM whose mainframe revenue prevented it from seeing the PC. The same was true of Bill Gates who declared "internet is a fad!" and then turned around to bundle the browser with windows to bury Netscape. The point is not who is today's competitor. Today's competitor is obvious. Tomorrow's is not.

In 2008, who was the toughest competitor to British Airways in India? Singapore airlines? Better still, Indian airlines? Maybe, but there are better answers. There are competitors that can hurt all these airlines and others not mentioned. The answer is videoconferencing and telepresence services of HP and Cisco. Travel dropped due to recession. Senior IT executives in India and abroad were compelled by their head quarters to use videoconferencing to shrink travel budget. So much so, that the mad scramble for American visas from Indian techies was nowhere in sight in 2008. (India has a quota of something like 65,000 visas to the U.S. They were going a-begging. Blame it on recession!). So far so good. But to think that the airlines will be back in business post recession is something I would not bet on. In short term yes. In long term a resounding no. Remember, if there is one place where Newton's law of gravity is applicable besides physics it is in electronic hardware. Between 1977 and 1991 the prices of the now dead VCR (parent of Blue-Ray disc player) crashed to one-third of its original level in India. PC's price dropped from hundreds of thousands of rupees to tens of thousands. If this trend repeats then telepresence prices will also crash. Imagine the fate of airlines then. As it is not many are making money. Then it will surely be RIP!

India has two passions. Films and cricket. The two markets were distinctly different. So were the icons. The cricket gods were Sachin and Sehwag. The filmi gods were the Khans (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and the other Khans who followed suit). That was, when cricket was fundamentally test cricket or at best 50 over cricket. Then came IPL and the two markets collapsed into one. IPL brought cricket down to 20 overs. Suddenly an IPL match was reduced to the length of a 3 hour movie. Cricket became film's competitor. On the eve of IPL matches movie halls ran empty. Desperate multiplex owners requisitioned the rights for screening IPL matches at movie halls to hang on to the audience. If IPL were to become the mainstay of cricket, as it is likely to be, films have to sequence their releases so as not clash with IPL matches. As far as the audience is concerned both are what in India are called 3 hour "tamasha" (entertainment). Cricket season might push films out of the market.

Look at the products that vanished from India in the last 20 years. When did you last see a black and white movie? When did you last use a fountain pen? When did you last type on a typewriter? The answer for all the above is "I don't remember!" For some time there was a mild substitute for the typewriter called electronic typewriter that had limited memory. Then came the computer and mowed them all. Today most technologically challenged guys like me use the computer as an upgraded typewriter. Typewriters per se are nowhere to be seen.

One last illustration. 20 years back what were Indians using to wake them up in the morning? The answer is "alarm clock." The alarm clock was a monster made of mechanical springs. It had to be physically keyed every day to keep it running. It made so much noise by way of alarm, that it woke you up and the rest of the colony. Then came quartz clocks which were sleeker. They were much more gentle though still quaintly called "alarms." What do we use today for waking up in the morning? Cellphone! An entire industry of clocks disappeared without warning thanks to cell phones. Big watch companies like Titan were the losers. You never know in which bush your competitor is hiding!

On a lighter vein, who are the competitors for authors? Joke spewing machines? (Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, himself a Pole, tagged a Polish joke telling machine to a telephone much to the mirth of Silicon Valley). Or will the competition be story telling robots? Future is scary! The boss of an IT company once said something interesting about the animal called competition. He said "Have breakfast ...or.... be breakfast"! That sums it up rather neatly.

Project Tiger was incorporated in 1973 with nine tiger reserves covering an area of 16,339 sq.km., which has increased to 37,761 sq.km. in 27 Tiger Reserves. The budgetary provision of the Government of India during 1973 was only Rs. 23 million, which has increased to 230 million during 2000-2001.

In the beginning of the 1970s, once tiger hunting had officially been banned in India, a tiger count was done across the entire country. This lead to the astonishing discovery that only 1800 specimens of this magnificent animal were left. This jolted the concerned authorities and some serious thought went into devising plans to save the tiger. The result was the launch of "Project Tiger" in 1972 at the Dhikala Forest Rest House in Corbett National Park. The main idea behind the project was to provide safe havens for tigers where they could flourish as a species and hopefully reverse the startling decline in their population. The project initially had 9 parks that were chosen for it's implementation. This number has slowly risen and a total of 19 parks are now attached to the project. The project was begun in association with and still receives its main funding from the WWF.

Although the experts affirm that the project has its shortcomings, the increase in the populations of the tiger is clearly evident to even the common man. Many experts had predicted that the tiger would be extinct by the turn of the century, but, whoever may be responsible, the tiger has proudly proved them wrong. Tiger population may not still be in thrilling numbers and poaching still may be quite rampant but a lot more effort is being put into saving this beautiful animal. This is good news for the entire natural treasure of the country because if the tiger flourishes, so will the jungle and vice-versa.

This is a small piece of information from google sir for u all but only information will do nothing..we r not associated with any tiger project or national park so we'll ask ourself that what we can do to save tigers??we may not be connected directly to the tiger conservation but indirectly ..ofcourse we are...we r connected with energy saving in our everyday life...we are connected with cleanliness..we are connected with raising concerns in our fellow mates about the things connected with conservation of tigers, energy, other animals and the mother nature in all...so we can take a step forward and how to speak up,how to convince other people that each of us already knows..so think of sumthing guys n move on...hav fun n take care..life is beautiful...

NEVER mess with children..:P

NEVER mess with children..:P
5 reasons not
to mess with children

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a
human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was
very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a
human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.
The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

*********************************************************************************************************************************************

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the
dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had
several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette
head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of
your hairs white, Mom?'
Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and
make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'
The little girl thought about his revelation for a while and then
said, 'Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

*********************************************************************************************************************************************

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to
persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.
'Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown
up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael,
He's a doctor.'
A small voice at the back of the room rang out, 'And there's the
teacher, she's dead.'

*********************************************************************************************************************************************

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying
to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my
head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red
in the face.'
'Yes,' the class said.
'Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary
position the blood doesn't run into my feet?'
A little fellow shouted,
'Cause your feet ain't empty.'

*********************************************************************************************************************************************
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary
school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.
The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
'Take only ONE . God is watching.'
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was
a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'

INFOSYS: So far, So Good ! Actually its Great !

I heard the batting genius Sunil Gavaskar saying this about greatness. We tend to loosely term every bright part of our life as great but there is a difference between good and great.

But with my share of experiences so far i would still go for the term Great.

Travelled from home city Patna to Mysore on a journey exactly 60 hours to reach to the cozy den of mine from where i am writing this piece.
The journey, which began by boarding the train SanghMitra Express on 3rd December 2009, was unique in many ways,
a. Papa got stuck with the parking lot problem and surprisingly I had mom to rescue for the first time visit to railway station to accompany me to my coach.
b. The train crossed over 7 states of India which was incredible,
Bihar(patna)
UP(allahabad)
MP(jabalpur)
Maharastra(nagpur)
AndhraPradesh(vijaywada)
Tamilnadu(chennai)
Karnataka(bengaluru).

On Sunday 6th december, we checked in, as instructed. The entry procedure was a very simple yet comprehensive.

More to follow...
Stay tuned...

Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.... Back to our roots....

Hey friends, I am on a fast today on Republic Day & have decided to donate the money saved to any poor person(we have a group called SOFTEN in our organization).

Lets start an initiative "miss a meal or two & contribute to this noble cause".
I know we don't need to starve for donating, but the idea is to fail the pain many other indians r going through & feel the responsibility we have as a citizen of day..
What say ?
Ho jae !!!

And watched the new video release of "phir mile sur" this was euphoric..
I just missed the cricket stars !

Continuing from where i left ...

I have never been a picnic stuff throughout my life as you all know me..
But whenever its about organizing one, specially when noone is willing to, it comes naturally from inside.

This was one of those days when noone was sure about taking up responsibility of the group as a whole, because we hardly know each other yet. And believe me, its easier to control children than young professionals who have just recently got the tags of being gentlemen.
The destination was a wonderful water fall, as it turned out to be. And the group was an incredible bunch of gems.. We all just had everything right and to our pleasure. The water fall was tremendous and yup it was much more than risky at times.
Once i had a pulse of getting at the top to see the origin of the water, it was a risky trekking skill revisited which i have refined after coming from college. And i fell in love with heights again. Once i was midway it occurred to me that climbing up may have been adventurous but climbing down on wet and slippery rocks was a very bad idea. I was tired of the past 3 hours of playing in water and from the top the picture was not very bright.

There were moments when i was not in a position to appreciate the amount of pressure which gravity was applying on my body as well as on my mind, but i kept it simple and before others could sense the nervousness in my smile i got down safe and sound.
I touched a rainbow and helped 'someone' to get a taste of the thrust the natural shower has to offer when it falls right on you. And the person was really grateful for that amazing experience. No guys, relax, i was not flirting..
We as professionals are not supposed to :-):-):-):-)

The rainbow was a treat and i never realised that such a beautiful phenomena of science could happen so close to me as if it were our practical lab. Nature at its best.. I am definitely loving this.. Ta rum pum pum..

Monday sessions are as boring as they can be on any monday and i am looking forward to a good sleep on Tuesday, Republic day.

Hope you all are doing fine..
Have a nice day ahead..

Lots and lots of love,
Saurav.

A Picnic after a long time !!

Hi all,
This is for the benefit or those who think that life at infosys is hectic like hell. Guys we went to picnic and the destination was a waterfall Shivnasamudra(85 km from Mysore).
It was great fun and my first experience of the thrust of the water falling from the mountains. The sound was amazingly soothing and our group was just perfect.:-)

I would come with detailed report soon..
Have fun.
Lots of love.
Saurav

somewhere...someday...someone...

experienced something...waking up early in the morning....talking to yourself....talking to someone who completes you....going out...feeling the nature....fresh air...birds...rising sun....trees...lakes...so serene so beautiful...feeling at peace with myself...listening to music ...anything...be it shloka..be it a romantic number...or may be one of the bhojpuris...like kaun disha mein leke chala re batohiya....presently listening to ...do u remember me..like i remember u....because i...i walk the streets alone....somebody wants you...somebody needs you....somebody dreams about you every single night....somebody can't breathe...without is lonely......listen to it yaar.....enrique has put all the pains of the lover.....
hi freinds..so this what i experienced on one of the saturday mornings....and believe me...no don't believe me...just experience it....you will feel so positive...so good...
people say a single person cannot change the world.....i do believe that its correct....but hey wait on...who says that we cease making an effort to change the world....lets prove ourselves wrong...let us change the world....

wake up early in the morning to start with.....try to make your freinds do the same....give them a miss call....bang on their doors....do it every day....may be one day he will wake up....and that day believe me you will feel like yes...yes i did something......and yes i changed the world...

i have the energy....i can inspire people...i can do anything....i intend to make the life of the people better....i want to bring them close to the nature....

i recall one of the hindi poems i read in 8th or 7th standard......bahar niklo...bheengo...galo...tap jao...aandhi toofano ko siir par lena shiko...tabhi tumhe bhi dharti ka aashish milega....tabhi tumhe pranoo mein woh paalash ka phool khilega......

one of my friends drink....i wont name him.....i have talked to him several times on this....he still drinks....but he has promised me that one day he will leave it.....i wait for the day.....i pray to God...hi God help him...help him get over this....he is such a nice soul...and i believe him more that he believes himself......

one of my friends...and i again wont name him....he is going through a tough phase of the life....everybody has to go through....it makes you tough..resilient....bold and a better human being...may God give him all the strength to face it head on.....

so be good....do good...make people around you laugh....spread goodness...collect goodness....be positive....life is not that complex......

put hand an your heart...and say all is well.....
God bless....
and to those who dont believe in God....do good...and the people will bless you...

singing off for the time being....will be back with more such expeineces..more goodness.....and hoping that one day "I" will change the world...

Quite on Contrary !

India is a wonderful country. And to refer to this land the most easily frequently used word would be diversity.

When news of traffic on hold due to extreme climatic conditions is taking much of the space in both form of media, it is extremely pleasant out here in South India.

Mornings are like february mornings in terms of North India, afternoons sometimes even better than mornings, evenings are as beautiful as Nirjuli's one and night are the best part of the whole clock.

Must be jealous of all of this description, now let of tell you the real part.:-)

there is hardly any mornings for us, we are running to get to sessions after a late getting up from bed.

We never get to see the afternoons because of the hectic assignments and schedulings.
Evenings are like lost in air.....
While nights are torn between session 's over burdens and a glimpse of sleep.

But Aal is Well !!

And so far so good for me!

Another day another concept to learn.:-)

From my desk, somewhere inside INFOSYS CAMPUS (cannot disclose the location:Company Policy), my hungry stomach shouts 1300hrs. but my maxima watch corrects it by 45mints..

We are waiting for the evaluation or the lunch break, whichever comes first. Some are being evaluated while others anxiously waiting for their turn and doing all sorts of activities to overcome the buzzing in the stomach. The day has been satisfying in terms of the result and the ease of the methods used by me. I maintained my record of solving the problem in more than one ways to get the perfect output. The coding part was easy, the new thing learnt out of all this was the integration part. I learnt to work in teams and was blessed to have wonderful and dedicated team. No points for guessing that they completed their part much before I declared mine as done.

Tomorrow it is the big test and things ahead would be much better in terms of handling the pressure.I just hope to continue with my charm and enjoying nature with seemingly monotonous days at Infy.

Lots and lots of love to all of you and i feel delighted to be able to be in touch of so many of my very special friends through this.

Life is so far so good.

Coding is so much fun and the instance of getting the expected results gives so many of those sky rocketing pulses of joy and ecstasy. Obviously sometimes it seems worth throwing ones' box (read computer) out of window.

Encounter with the greats

So it was the first encounter with the great man Mr. NRN and he was looking impeccable. The glaze in his eyes and the cheerful nature was very soothing. And he was accompanied by none other than our very own MD Krish. I am sure the rest of the board members were also there but in the awe of the situation i just couldn't get my eyes beyond the former.

Few thoughts............

Kalpakkam, 2200 hrs

Wish you all a happy and prosperous new year………..Aal izz well.

The foremost thing that you notice about a Nuclear establishment is the security it is reinforced with (it seems almost half of the country’s CISF is deployed here). It does take time but eventually you do overcome the preceding thoughts and realize that it’s not only during war one needs to be careful about radiations but in places near nuclear plants also you must take all the precautions for radiation protection. It may be that not half the CISF is deployed here but every person working here seems to be military trained by the way they religiously follow the rules.

Everyone here seems to have an attitude of his own, whose is greater than whose is really hard to identify. I am still in process of identifying the cause of it, is it because of southern climate or nuclear radiation, but no success yet. Anybody from care taker to Training Superintendent can kick your ass and you have no right to complain about it. Although Bus drivers seem a little ahead of all of them, they just won’t stop when you want them to , they won’t start until they feel like, no matter what you tell them they will have only one answer “Ille!”(I don’t know if it means f*** you). They won’t let you in if they don’t feel like, they won’t let you out if you are a second late on the gate sometimes I feel had they been allowed they would have put a board on their buses “Dogs and Trainees not allowed” that too in Tamil so that dogs couldn’t read it and feel offended.

Sometimes you regret for your mistakes done by you knowingly or unknowingly and seek penance for it, believe me if you are a North Indian being served South Indian food daily you are repenting for your past sins. You are made to eat all that non-edible food and first time in your life you realize why people (North Indians) tremble when they talk of South Indian food.

Tamilians are one of their kind, they don’t love the word fun at all (or maybe they have their own version of the word meaning “fun”). But actually they are fond of some things like:

1. Keeping unpronounceable name of their places and themselves (try pronouncing Arulmigu, Karpagambal ) and with an extra “th” whenever “t” is required namitha, jayalalitha etc.
2. Wearing gajras.
3. Walking down in lungi’s and even better if barefoot(hope congress’s austerity drive was inspired here)
4. Waking up at 5 in morning and sleeping at 9:00 PM
5. And RAJNIKANTH, mind the extra “h”

People here just love rules and even love more following them, so next time you are thinking of getting into argument with a Tamilian better carry a rule book, it doesn’t matter if you have written it yourself (although you would have a tough time explaining him which rule allowed you to write a rule book). But along with all these things they are really decent and intellectual people with a heart which beats for love and emotions.

Among all this mayhem I had the sweetest thing in form of friends with me who did make everything so calm and easy. You really don’t expect such nice people in the corporate world after what you have seen it from outside. I know that every person is different in this world but guys around me seem to be specialist of their respective fields. We have the guy who just love helping people and one who know how to extract help from others, and we have one who can make joke of anything and one who can make anything a joke. We have one who can’t stop chattering about girls and one who can’t utter a word in presence of a girl. I can go on writing about the qualities guys here are possessed with but it seems sufficient for giving an idea of the genre we have and as far I am concerned.

All the facts and comments written above are for the sole purpose of creating humor and I deeply regret if any one finds them offensive.

"HEARTY WELCOME YEAR 2010"

Jan 01, 2010
1410 hours.

Hi guys,
Amm..So this is it…the most anticipated moments showing up the lights…the new year with all its new hopes, aspires, oppurtunites for me, for all of you has finally showed up. For you may be thinking of it as an end to a 53rd Thursday and the beginning of yet another 1st Friday but then, its remarkable nevertheless citing the “BALL” dropping at New Yorks’ Times Square, ‘Jai Ho’ tunes singing in the air above the Australian sky, magical fireworks around Sydney, London, NorthWest Ohio, performers’ rocking concerts around Mumbai, Bengaluru & Goas’ steaming parties……there is simply joy in the air.

Well, it sounds it counts.

Anyway guys, it’s the new year day and I have received wishes all over since midnight and its really wonderful and touching when you have so many strands standing with you, wishing you merry days around the year. I wished all too within my reaches and yeah, it’s a rejoicing, enticing make-a-wish celebration or conversation when you get through it. It’s beautiful. And for sure, it motivates someone and clears the heart for all.

Last word, I wish all of you readers a ‘Very Happy New Year’ times ahead and its time you step out and start wishing for all you really care about.
As I said, my role is just to get your motivation and I can just hope I did that because:
Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going”. - Jim Ryun

See you all.
Regards,
dEV

And friends,, however much i want to share with you people the things i went through, I couldn't as we have everything but freedom of speech.
